SYNERGY Rewards Receives Top Sustainability Award For Reducing Energy Consumption at Fort Drum

January 10, 2013
By Business Wire

SYNERGY Rewards, a behavior-based energy conservation program being tested by the Pentagon, has been awarded the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council’s Beyond Green Award for High-Performance Initiatives for its role in reducing energy consumption at the U.S. Army’s Fort Drum.

Designed and implemented by Online-Rewards, SYNERGY Rewards was created to help the Department of Defense meet its objective of reducing energy consumption by 20 percent before 2020. The program incentivizes military families with gift cards, merchandise and other prizes to positively change their energy consumption behavior. Unlike other approaches to energy conservation that can require substantial financial and time investments, this type of behavior-change program is inexpensive, with costs linked to actual improvements.

“This is a high-tech approach to conservation that clearly has accomplished greater success at Fort Drum than old-fashioned posters and public service announcements,” said Online-Rewards President Michael Levy. “It’s exciting to contemplate the sustainability gains and cost-savings that could be achieved if the program would be expanded to other military installations and ultimately to utilities along the U.S. power grid.”

Levy: It's Time to End the Year-End Bonuses
Let's start with a clarification of objectives. This isn't a polemic against the holiday bonus. 'Tis the season. If you have the capability and desire to give to employees, feel free. But it's a gift. It doesn't drive performance or change corporate outcomes.

I'm talking about the year-end bonus that's intended to serve strategic objectives, such as retaining the best employees or rewarding behavior for helping the company achieve its goals.

What matters most is that you apply your rewards budget in a manner that most significantly improves performance and productivity, and strengthens employee satisfaction. Everyone's a winner.

Get in the Game: Applying Gamification to On-the-Job Safety

OH&S: Occupational Health & Safety, October 2012
By Michael Levy
Winning bragging rights can be rewarding in and of itself, but if there’s a carrot being dangled, we become even more determined.

It isn't easy to put a price on a worker's health and safety, but if we had to, it would be this: $1 billion. That is the amount U.S. employers pay every week in direct workers' compensation alone, according to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. With a sum like that, one can say workers' safety is a prized commodity.

So, then, why not actually give safe workers a reward for their practices?
